Nvidia recently launched their “Optimized PC” campaign and took a swipe at Intel, the microprocessor industry leader. Claiming that over half the PC’s shipped today have an underpowered GPU, nVIDIA suggests customers should use a functional CPU and are better of by leaving their complicated computations to a GPU for a variety of OS, games and multimedia tasks.

On a budget configuration, the configurator recommends that a dual core Intel E4500 processor system with an nVidia 32 core - GeForce 8600 GT will outperform an Intel Quad Core Q6600 processor system running with Intel’s integrated Graphic Media Accelerator ( GMA X310 ) chip. Meanwhile Intel is working on it own graphics CPU or CGPU dubbed project Larrabee - designed to use native x86 instructions in their graphics cores vs specialized instructions that are currently available in GPU’s from nVidia and AMD/ATI.

In 2006, following its acquisition of ATI, AMD also announced their own CPU/GPU Fusion initiative. One only hopes that AMD will survive the current mess with its Barcelona delays to make the playing field more interesting. Who wins the battle eventually, only time will tell!
