The RedHat Desktop team posted an update on the progress of their RedHat desktop product offering. Outlining their strategic vision for desktop products, Redhat confirmed their continued work around building their desktop product for the enterprise that would complement their server and middleware offerings.
The team also went on record saying “we have no plans to create a traditional desktop product for the consumer market in the foreseeable future. As a public, for-profit company, Red Hat must create products and technologies with an eye on the bottom line, and with desktops this is much harder to do than with servers.” For more check out their detailed press announcement.
Linux users still have a choice of using other popular desktop distributions like OpenSuse, Fedora and Ubuntu Linux Desktop Edition. Ubuntu is currently one of the faster growing Linux distributions with 6 month release cycles and committed support for at least 18 months with security and other updates. Both OpenSuse and Fedora are commercially sponsored ( by Novell and Redhat respectively ) but supported only by their community of users. In light of this recent announcement from Redhat, it seems that Ubuntu Linux Desktop will be the destined distribution of choice for the consumer Linux desktop in the foreseeable future.
