Arctic ice melting at alarming rate

Post 2006, In 2007 a rapid decline in the ice sheet has been observed creating worry among environmentalist. With the current rate at which the ice is melting, climactic models suggest that the earth is getting warmer and is 30 years ahead of schedule.
The melting of the Arctic ice is however a blessing for trade and commerce. The Arctic pack ice prevents marine shipping throughout the year. With the ice melting at an accelerated rate, the Northwest Passage is opening up. This will allow ships to use the Arctic route, resulting in time savings, lowered fuel consumption and lowered cost. Environmentalists however are worried about the potential impact to the arctic ecosystem as commercial traffic increases. Oil spills and impact to Arctic wildlife are worrying possibilities.
