Cray to use Intel Xeon processors on their supercomputers

Cray servers have been designed around processors from AMD, arch rival to Intel. AMD has been struggling to keep up with Intel in the high performance processor business. With recent product delays with its much touted Barcelona quad-core design, AMD has lost significant market share to Intel. This deal is another blow to AMD’s position as a leader in the high performance processor market.
Cray’s stock shot up 7.5% on the news. Intel shares were largely unchanged at market close. AMD stock was down 1%.
