Sun confirms mysql is fully open source

Kaj, VP community for MySQL AB today reaffirmed in his blog that mysql is and always will be fully open source including backup functionality, MyISAM driver, encryption, compression backup features and all the storage engines.

Sun’s acquisition of mysql has forced the company to integrate itself with Sun’s latest mantra of open source software. Sun recently announced the availability of its OpenSolaris open source operating system with integrated ZFS support.

Mysql open source components include commitment to ensure that the following are open source

  1. Code
  2. API
  3. Data format’s

Mysql ecosystem members can build proprietary as well as open source add-on’s using the open source interfaces from mysql.

A note of caution for users, the blog does mention that Sun/Mysql is experimenting with the business model so things can change in the future.
