Wiki company WetPaint announced that it has raised $25 million to accelerate its growth. The company also introduced a new feature - WetPaint Injected that allows publishers to wikify or rather “wetpaintify” their site.
Injected incorporates features common in social sites like inviting friends, embedded editing etc. The unique aspect of Injected is that it is not a widget style application for websites to embed in their pages. Instead WetPaint will integrate with the publisher site on the server side technologies with WetPaint sharing revenue on ads from the wikified pages. This allows search engines to index publisher pages vs WetPaint hosted sites.
The financing was led by DAG Ventures and another unnamed financial investor that brings the total investment in Wetpaint to approximately $40 million. WetPaint claims to have close to a million wiki’s on it’s content network. John Cadeddu, General Partner at DAG Ventures noted that “The resulting content is hugely valuable — it’s already monetizing 10 to 20 times better than what we see on social networks.”
