Sprint has announced today that the Samsung Instinct will be available on its network starting June 20th and will retail for $129.99 for a 2 year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate.
Instinct is Samsung’s answer to the iPhone and will finally be available after significant delays from its original launch plans a year ago. Unfortunately for Samsung, Apple will be releasing it’s 3G iPhone starting July 11th in 22 countries around the world. The new 3G iPhone makes up for some of the missing features in the first iPhone which the Instinct has e.g. 3G/high speed capability, in built GPS. However, unlike the iPhone, the Instinct has no support for Wi-Fi and also lacks multi-touch support.
Unsurprisingly, the Instinct looks a lot like the iPhone - a dark colored, full touchscreen, no physical keyboard, large screen. Here’s a short dump on the Instinct’s capabilities
- Full touch-screen functionality
- Live TV
- Stereo Bluetooth
- GPS with turn-by-turn navigation
- One-touch access to favorites
- 2GB microSD(TM) card that can hold approximately 2,000 songs from Sprint Music Store
- Two standard 1,000 mAh batteries offering up to 5.75 hours of continuous talk time each.

A very! biased video comparison from Smasung/Sprint is below from the phone site - nowisgood.com. The live TV demo looks cool. The iPhone does not offer that as of today, although there are hacks / solutions to stream live TV to the iPhone as well using mod’s ( much to Apple’s chagrin )
As Sprint’s first EV-DO Rev A consumer-centric device, the Instinct must be activated on a pricing plan offering unlimited data for enabling the full potential of the device as per the press release.
