DATAllegro, a maker of high-end data warehousing appliances, has agreed to sell to Microsoft for an undisclosed amount. The company began with a $6 million Series A round from Venrock and Palomar Ventures in 2004, and in total has raised just under $65 million in venture money.

Other investors include Adams Capital, Focus Ventures, Intel Capital and Jafco Ventures. The deal gives a speedy return to industrial-conglomerate-turned-investment firm Hillman Co., which led the company’s Series D round in April.

This will be Microsoft’s sixth acquisition of a venture-backed company this year. The software giant is the most prolific buyer of venture companies so far this year.

“All the investors are happy and all involved made money,” said Brian Ascher, a general partner at Venrock, the company’s largest shareholder. Although DATAllegro’s leadership was not actively looking for a buyer, the team recognized that this would be the most likely exit for the company and anticipated that a consolidation would begin soon in the data warehousing market.
