With Google’s Chrome browser now available in beta for Windows, Firefox is already changing it’s product roadmap. A post on the development lists has revealed renewed focus from Mike Connor, Firefox 3 development lead, on introducing private mode in the next update to Firefox in response to the incognito mode introduced in Google’s Chrome. A full read of comments in the posting reveal that the request for this feature has been pending since 2004 when Apple’s Safari introduced the feature.

Private mode or incognito mode, as Google calls it for Chrome, lets a user browse in stealth mode. In this mode, web pages opened and files downloaded won’t be logged in the browsing and download histories. Also, all new cookies will be deleted after closing the incognito window wiping out any trail of browsing activities.

A similar feature is available in the upcoming release of Internet Explored 8 ( IE8 ) from Microsoft. The feature has often been dubbed as the porn mode for folks browsing porn materials online but not wanting to leave a trace.
