Google’s very own Android phone has hit the market today. T-Mobile is launching the G1, the world’s first Android-powered phone. Rumors have been floating around the Google phone built by HTC, as HTC filed for FCC approval for a touch screen device.

The G1 is a full touchscreen device and has an inbuilt QWERTY keyboard that slides open, much like the sidekick. At $179.99 with a two-year agreement, it is priced competitively to the iPhone. The phone will start shipping to customers on  October 22, just in time for the winter holiday shopping season.

More than 1,700 applications are available for the G1 and were developed as part of the Android Developer Challenge. Google products like Search, Gmail, and Maps are available on the Android platform and the phone is preloaded with Search, Maps, Gmail with Contacts, Calendar, Google Talk, and YouTube.

Google has also announced a market place for developers building applications for Android. Developers will soon be able to distribute their applications to real handsets through the beta version of Android Market.
