The US national debt clock has overflown the digits as the country’s debt has reached $10 trillion. The one and the dollar sign had to be squeezed into the same square. The clock also display’s the amount owed by each citizen of the US, which as of last week stood at $86,017.

The national debt clock is a billboard-sized display installed at the Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan which is constantly updated to show the current United States public debt and each family’s share. Invented and sponsored by New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, it was installed in 1989.

The national debt has almost doubled in the last 8 years under the Bush administration, rising from $5.7 trillion to $10 trillion as President Bush enters the last 100 days of his eight years in the White House. Under President Clinton, the United States paid of $355 billion of the nation’s debt in the three years since the government balanced the budget and began running surpluses.
