Even though Apple’s retail market share in personal computers is at 14 percent, it holds an impressive 66 percent of the market share for computers priced over $1000. This figure only reflects store sales for the first three months of 2008 and does not include online purchases. The study was published by NPD Group. Except for Mac Mini, all of the personal computers from Apple are priced $1000 or above.
Raw Data:
- Apple holds 14 percent of US retail market share with 66 percent market share for computers priced above $1000
- For desktop computers above $1000, retail share is 70 percent while for notebooks it is 64 percent
- Apple notebooks are enjoying 50 to 60 percent growth year-to-year, Windows notebooks had zero percent growth
Why it matters?
- Even though some Apple notebooks can run the Windows operating system as well as Mac OS X, a growth in Apple’s computer will be translated to a growth in Mac OS X and applications for the operating system.
- Windows Vista continues to struggle to take off indicating the room for the next Gen personal computer OS is wide open for Apple to capture.
