WSJ reports Android delay, Google disagrees
Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/5u4hctAccording to WSJ, Google’s Android plateform for mobile phones won’t have a working handset until the 4th quarter. According to the report “some cellular carriers and makers of programs that work with Android are struggling to meet that schedule, people familiar with the situation say. T-Mobile USA expects to deliver an Android-powered phone in the fourth period. But that launch is taking up so much of Google’s attention and resources that Sprint Nextel Corp., which had hoped to launch an Android phone this year, won’t be able to, a person familiar with the matter said.”
Google has denied that its much-touted mobile phone system, the gPhone, is facing delays and would be unlikely to hit the streets before Christmas.
Google insists that development is on track and the first phones will be for sale in the second half of the year as planned. “We are on schedule and we’re very excited to see the momentum continuing to build behind the Android platform among carriers, manufacturers, developers and consumers,” a spokeswoman said.
In the meantime, the iPhone is enjoying all the attention and has opened up its SDK to 3rd party applications for the 3G phone slated to be available from the 11th of July in 22 countries.
