Microsoft might acquire Powerset
Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/6kdy9gRumor is that Microsoft has expressed interest in acquiring natural language based search engine Powerset. First reported by VentureBeat, and now confirmed by various news organization (although still with anonymous sources), that talks are in progress and Microsoft or some other search giant would acquire Powerset very soon. Microsoft is rumoured to be eying Powerset for $100 million.
Powerset uses semantic or natural language based search, currently only on Wikipedia and Freebase. This technology lets user asks real questions such as “How was Rome built?” compared to current search technologies of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft that would ignore “How” and “was” and ask user to mix keywords such as “Rome building process” to describe their question. Powerset has licensed natural language technology from PARC, the former Xerox Palo Alto Center.
Powerset was founded in 2005 and has wide range of investors including PayPal founder and CEO Peter Thiel and Reid Hoffman, CEO of linkedIn.
