Pioneer is making a big leap by introducing a 400GB Blu-ray disk compared to the next best thing, a 50GB dual layer Blue-ray disk. A 50GB Blu-ray disc could hold up to about 6 hours of high-definition video but with this new disk, you can hold up to 48 hours of high-definition video.

The new Pioneer technology has 16 layers on a conventional 12-centimeter optical disc, and is currently a play-only version while the writable version is a work in progress. Rival TDK has also announced a high-capacity disc, with six layers and a 150GB capacity. Pioneer is using a disc structure that can reduce crosstalk from adjacent layers, resulting in a 16-layer optical disc that can playback high-quality signals from every layer.

This multilayer technology will also be applicable to multilayer recordable discs. This development is a major advancement towards the large-capacity optical discs, which are expected to become necessary in the near future.

The open question however is whether Pioneer has a good way to solve the scratch issues common with DVD/CD media which makes them unsuitable for data archival/backup. With 400GB’s of data sitting on the super Blu-day disk, it’s a whole lot of data that can be lost in one go!

More details on the technology can be found at Pioneer’s site here.
