Kevin Johnson joined Microsoft in 1992 and since 2005, he has served as president of Microsoft’s platforms and services division that includes Windows operating system and Windows Live services such as online search and advertisements. On Wednesday, Microsoft said that Kevin would be leaving Microsoft to join Juniper Networks - a Sunnyvale, California based company that builds network equipment like switches, routers etc.

Kevin has helped Microsoft with the $6 billion acquisition of online advertising company aQuantive in 2007 but this year, so far Microsoft has failed in its bid for Yahoo or its search division.

Microsoft plans to split the platforms and services division in two and the Windows/Windows Live division will be led by senior vice presidents Steven Sinofsky, Jon DeVaan and Bill Veghte. Microsoft will begin its search for a new leader for its online business division.

Johnson’s departure isn’t surprising in light of the poor performance of Microsoft’s Online Services Business, which reported a $488 million loss in operating income in its recently concluded fiscal fourth quarter, compared to $210 million during the same quarter last year. For the year, the Online Services Division racked up an operating income loss of $1.2 billion, compared to $617 million the previous year.
