If you liked picking on others when you are surfing up the internet or if you harass your classmates with your text messages, you are a ‘cyber bully’. And now, if your home state is California you might be in trouble.

Lawmakers in California are close to passing a bill in state Legislature that will enforce serious consequences on cyber bullies including suspension and expulsion from the school.

The measure has already passed the Senate on Monday by a 21-11 vote. Now it goes back to the Assembly for consideration of Senate amendments and will be sent to Governer Arnold Schwarzenegger if passed. He has already promised not to bully any other legislature. The bill applies to bullying through messaging, cell phones, pagers, computers or other electronic communications.

The bill was conceived by Assemblyman Ted Lieu, a Democrat from Torrance, who believe cyber bullying is becoming a real threat for students due to popularity of social networking sites and text messages.

Educators say it can be tougher to prevent than physical bullying because it often occurs away from school or after school hours.
