Bill Kristol’s “reliable” sources refuted by Powell

Bill Kristol, conservative commentator and The Weekly Standard editor, has quite a few reliable sources in Washington, D.C and worldwide. And if the past is any guide the sources have been reliably WRONG.

Bill told FOX News Channel today that retired Army General and former Secretary of State for the Bush Administration, Colin Powell, plans to endorse Democratic candidate Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, according to his sources. This makes logical sense in Bill’s mind since both Barack Obama and Colin Powell are African American.

“I am hearing from people who talk directly to the Obama campaign that Colin Powell will endorse Senator Obama and he may well give a speech at the Democratic National Convention explaining his endorsement of Obama,” Kristol said on the cable news channel today.

“People are very confident that Powell will endorse Obama, and they think it may well be the case that Powell will speak on Wednesday at the Democratic Convention,” Kristol added. “That’s the national security night and that’s also the night the vice presidential nominee will speak.”

Kristol also added that Powell “obviously served the first term in the Bush administration; I don’t think that was a happy experience honestly for Secretary Powell, and, for whatever reason, I think he has decided that he is going to endorse Obama.”

Well, within few hours after Kristol’s statements, Colin Powell blasted him with a response on ABC News - “I do not have time to waste on Bill Kristol’s musings…. I am not going to the convention. I have made this clear.” and sent an email to Washington Post including - “I am not attending either political convention. As I have said for some time, I know both candidates and I am studying their positions and statements. I have not decided who I will vote for.”

Bill Kristol is famous for saying this in 2003 - “There’s been a certain amount of pop sociology in America … that the Shia can’t get along with the Sunni and the Shia in Iraq just want to establish some kind of Islamic Fundamentalist regime. There’s almost no evidence of that at all. Iraq’s always been very secular.”
