Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/6hejbu60% of the Americans surveyed in George Washington University Battleground Poll think Republican Presidential nominee John McCain is running a negative campaign. The number is a sum of 50% who think John McCain is the only one making personal attacks and 10% thinking both candidates have gone negative. Only 21% of the respondents think Democratic candidate Barack Obama is exclusively running negative campaign.
The George Washington University Battleground Poll is a periodic survey conducted jointly by a bipartisan group comprising Republican strategist Ed Goeas of The Tarrance Group and Democrat Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners. The results of latest survey were released on August 20. According to the Battleground Poll’s website -
Initiated in June 1991, the Battleground Polls have gained widespread media recognition as reliable bellwethers of national opinion and voters’ intentions. The Battleground data projected the outcome of the 1992 presidential race more precisely than any other similar effort in the country, including those of the major TV networks and national newspapers. In addition, Battleground Polls have consistently been major predictors of what is going to happen in approaching Congressional elections.
However, the fact that Americans think John McCain is running a negative campaign might be the only highlight for Barack Obama. The other interesting findings of the Polls are -
- John McCain is leading Barack Obama 40% to 39% with 19% undecided.
- The most important issue for Americans is Jobs and Economy (40%) followed by Gas and Energy (28%) and The War in Iraq (25%)
- President Bush’s approval rating stands at 35%.
- 51% Americans still think the War in Iraq was not worth fighting for even though 56% believe the situation in Iraq has gotten better.
- 44% of the respondents believe American forces should stay in Iraq until the situation is comfortable. 31% want a timeline for withdrawal while 23% asking for immediate withdrawal.
- Both Barack Obama and John McCain have 57% favorable rating and tied unfavorable rating as well.
- Presidential Candidate’s spouses Michelle Obama has 48% favorable and 18% unfavorable rating while Cindy McCain have 46% favorable and 31% unfavorable rating.
- Neither Barack Obama nor John McCain were the first choice of respondents when the primary and caucuses started. Barack Obama (21%) was trailing Hillary Clinton (23%) while John McCain (10%) was trailing Mitt Romney (13%).
- 51% of the respondents do believe Barack Obama is going to win the elections compared to 34% showing confidence in John McCain. This is in sharp contrast to McCain’s one point lead over Obama.
