Before the major party conventions started, i.e., on August 24, Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain was trailing Democratic hopeful Barack Obama in polls by 45% to 48% on Rasmussen Reports, or tied 45% to 45% on Gallup Daily Tracking.

After the Democratic Convention, Obama had taken a significant lead 45% to 51% on Resmussen Reports and 42% to 50% on Gallup Daily Tracking.

But now, as both conventions are over, John McCain seems to be catching up to Obama at a fast pace. Rasmussen Reports 6th September Poll Result shows McCain trailing Obama just be 3% (49% to 46%) while Gallup shows Obama’s lead shurnk to 2 points (47% to 45%). However, in the light of the fact that the pie of swing voters is down from 30% to 21%, any lead would be an encouragement over nothing (even though a 2 point lead is a statistical tie).

According to Pollster.com, now only 99 Electoral Votes are up for toss up down from 110 last week. Democrats have held on to 260 Electoral votes while Republican Electoral votes are up from 168 to 179.
