Legal DVD Ripping comes from realDVD

DVD ripping is not a new idea. However, it is generally illegal to rip a DVD with copy protection. But later this month, RealNetworks will launch RealDVD, a software to legally rip the DVD while keeping the DRM intact. The announcement will be made on Monday at DEMOfall conference in San Diego.

The software copies everything on the DVD including the movie and extras without any compression and therefore will take exact same space on your hard disk as the size of the DVD. The copy will be viewable on up to 4 more PCs.

RealDVD is expected to cost $40-$50 with an introductory offer of $30 for a limited time. The software is limited to DVD format only (no HD-DVD or Blu-Ray).

The biggest hurdle for RealNetworks is that major studios are very unlikely to get comfortable with the idea of ripping movies by any means - legal or not. And therefore a major lawsuit might be coming.
