Layoff season: Wikia, Veoh cut jobs on Monday, Yahoo to detail on Tuesday

It was expected, that melting WallStreet will hurt everything in its vicinity and now it is happening in the valley. Wikia.com, a community based plateform for wikipages, has laid of 30 percent of its 43 person workforce on Monday, according to ValleyWag. Same day, Veoh.com, an online video hosting and search engine, has laid of 40 percent of its 94 person workforce.

Yahoo is expected to announce some details of its plan for cost-containment and lay offs on Tuesday, according to sources. Reduction in workforce is rumored to be over 1000 (WSJ) but predictions have gone as high as 3000 (AlleyInsider).

Sun warned of a big loss for Q1 2009 today that is expected to be between $0.25 and $0.35 per share. Would it surprise anyone if the announcement of more layoffs follows?

eBay had laid off 1000 people on October 6th. A bunch of startups including Jaxtr, Zillow, Pandora and Hi5 have laid off employees in recent weeks.
